Kitchen Appliance Warranties
An appliance warranty is a guarantee that the washer dryer, cooker or any other type of kitchen appliance will be repaired or replaced at no (extra) cost to you for the time period the the appliance is covered by the warranty. Often it will provide a specific repair, or replacement (partial or full) if the appliance fails within a certain amount of time after it was purchased. Typical warranties usually extend for a year after the date of purchase, but some warranties last for the lifetime of an appliance, whilst others may last for a few months, or until the appliance in question has been used for the first time.
Types of Appliance Warranties There are a few different types of warranties that refer to appliances. The most common type is the extended warranty, which is a standard guarantee that a appliance will not fail within a specific amount of time, determined by the manufacturer. These warranties will not cover anything outside of a mechanical failure from general personal use. Extended warranties are generally covered by the purchase price, but can be extended further if the purchaser wants to pay an additional fee. These are more like an insurance contract than an actual warranty.
Most appliances sold today come with warranties which guarantee repair or replacement if the appliance fails. Most kitchen appliances will simply be replaced “like for like” if they fail within the lifetime of the warranty. If an appliance fails after its warranty has expired, the consumer will not be protected and will be expected to purchase a replacement. Due to the decreasing number of repair facilities, most appliances which fail under warranty are simply replaced; it is more cost effective for companies to operate this way than have repair shops.
In order to exercise your right to use your warranty in case your appliance does stop working, it is vital that you keep the original receipt and all warranty information. If you are not able to prove where and when you purchased your appliance, you may have trouble getting it serviced in the event of a breakdown.
Is an Extended Warranty Worth the Expense? New Kitchen appliances have a manufacturer's guarantee that normally lasts for 12 months and sometime in say the case of a Bosch appliance 24 month if you regester the appliance after purchase. If you plan to replace you appliance after this an extended warranty can be a complete waste of your hard earned money.
Also don't forget your rights under the 1979 Sale of Goods Act, which determines that your new Kitchen appliance must work to a satisfactory standard. If not, the appliance must be fixed by the retailer you got it from free of charge.
